Sick Note Policy

March 12, 2014

Hi folks,

Two posts in one day! Exciting times!

As you’ve probably heard, the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association has recently suggested new guidelines to medical professionals with regard to sick notes. Given this, we need to readdress our policy in the physics classroom with regard to legitimate absences. Here is the new text for the syllabus with regard to this issue:

“For missed assessments (ie. labs, tests, in-class assignments, etc.), communication with your instructor prior to the absence is required IN WRITING (ie. via email) in ALL CASES. As a student, the responsibility is yours to ensure that your instructor has prior, written notice of your absence. Without such notice, decisions as to how to proceed will be made under the direction of the school’s administration on a case-by-case. Students should be aware that without this prior notice, a grade of zero may be assigned.”

The long and short of this policy is that you are no longer required to provide doctor’s notes for absences, but you are required to let me know in advance (ie. the morning of, at the latest), and you must do so in writing (ie. via email: a phone message isn’t enough).

Feel free to drop me a line if there’s any confusion about this change in policy!

Cheers, G
